The 1914 Iron Cross First Class was awarded to about 288,000 German soldiers during World War I for combat heroism, bravery or leadership. To receive this medal, the Iron Cross Second Class must first have been earned. There were instances of both medals being awarded simultaneously. This medal was worn sewn or pinned to the left breast pocket. Our reproduction is nickel-plated with a blackened center. The obverse displays the imperial crown, a “W” for Kaiser Wilhelm and the 1914 institution date. The reverse features a simple pin-back.
