The Pour le Merite, better known as the Blue Max, was the kingdom of Prussia’s highest military decoration. Created in 1740 by King Frederick II, it was abolished at the end of World War I. This order of merit was generally awarded to high-ranking officers. The name of the medal is in French because that was the language of the Prussian court when the medal was created. In World War I, the decoration became famous because it was awarded to German aviators. One of the early recipients during the war was flying ace Max Immelmann. The medal’s color and Immelmann’s fame led to the name Blue Max. Our reproduction is faithful in every detail, with a double-sided blue enameled cross patee, gilt eagles between the arms, and 10 inches of neck ribbon.
